Journal Two From Daniel Van Dyke

My name is Daniel Van Dyke. The major I'm studying is mechanical engineering and I plan to stay at Marion campus for two years. In my free time I like to play basketball with friends and enjoy the outdoors. A few years ago I researched and built a historical monument for the village I live in as my Eagle Scout project. I got to design the monument on paper and later used CAD software to create a 3D model of the monument and then construct it.

The historical monument I built for the Village of Milford Center.

In the book A Long Way Gone the theme of meeting back up with family stood out to me. When Ishmael and his brother and friend left home they didn't tell anyone they were leaving to see their friends in another village. They thought they would be back in a day or two. When they hear about their home has been attacked by the rebels all they want to do is go back home. They try to go back but soon realize that it was too late to find their families with all the other people coming through all bloody and hurt. This theme is important because it shows that they didn't give up and still have hope. It also shows that they really cared about them. If I was in their shoes I would of said something to my family before leaving and try to do everything I can to meet back up with them. My family means everything to me and I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to them.
