Journal 4: Sydney Alspach

Journal 4: Sydney Alspach

My active reading is going okay, at the beginning I was very motivated to do all of the active reading. I wanted to highlight and underline everything to give myself a better understanding of the book. Since I have had more assignments in other class I have been slacking a little bit on the active reading now. I know that is not an accuse but that is one of my reasoning's behind it. However, when I do actively read it is much easier for me to understand what I have read. In "The House on Mango Street" I highlighted this quote, "Marin's boyfriend is in Puerto Rico. She shows us his letters and makes us promise not to tell anybody they're getting married when she goes back to P.R." I marked this because I thought it was interesting because I wouldn't think they would want to hide their marriage. Marriage is something that people normally celebrated so I was wondering why they would want to hide that from people.

As of right now I really enjoy reading "A Long Way Gone". I enjoy reading it because it has so many different and unique details that I would have never pictured before reading this book. A theme that I think is important in this book is being independent. I think it is very important because Ishmael is alone all the time trying to survive. I would not be able to do the things he does. Ishmael has to learn how to get his own food, create a shelter or find a place to live. To me being that independent would be very hard for me.

  1. I totally agree with you on the fact that it is getting harder to find time to sit down and actively read every night. It has been a struggle for me as well to find the time to enjoy the books thoroughly. The active reading helps me a lot, because I tend to rush through reading (because of lack of time) so its nice to be able to read my notes, and remember what I had read.

  2. I hate reading and making me sit and read is seriously killing me inside. I hate reading and reading for a long time makes it worse .
