My active reading is going pretty good so far. I find it easier to remember want happens in the book. This is because I try to summarize every one to two paragraphs so it reminds me what happened in them. I also underline any characteristics and descriptive scenes that I find. The thing I struggle with most is that my active reading is better on some days over others. The example I marked in The House on Mango Street is "All brown all around, we are safe. But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity-shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight". (pg.28, Sandra Cisneros) I picked this because the author uses unique words to describe entering another neighborhood that is a different race than Esperanza.
I prefer the book A Long Way Gone over The House on Mango Street. I like it because the scenario is more interesting than the other book and the themes are easier to detect as well. I also found it hard to understand The House on Mango Street because it is a kind of writing that I'm not use to. A theme that I can relate to in A Long Way Gone is friendship and family. In the book Ishmael keeps his family and friends close. This gives him support to venture on and survive. I also like to keep my family close because we support each other when needed.
I also agree that The House on Mango Street is some what harder to understand because of its writing style.
ReplyDeleteI agree as well. The House on Mango Street is hard to follow and I also prefer A Long Way Gone. It keeps you wanting to know what happens next to where The House on Mango Street jumps around to much.
