Journal 4 from Kyle Smith

Highlighting and writing in the margins is definitely something to get used to. It is harder to slow down when you are reading to analysis the text. I am pushing my self to slow down when I am reading to get in the good habit. I don't write in the margins often but I am highlighting. I do occasionally write in the margins. "Meme has a big dog with grey eyes, a sheepdog with two names, one in English and one in Spanish. The dog is big like a man dressed in a dog suit, and it runs the same way its owner does, clumsy and wild with limbs flopping all over the place like untied shoes"(Cisneros 21). I like this because as I was reading it it felt like the book came to life. I had a visual image in my head of a big dog and man running down the street in  a weird way. It kind of made me laugh.
I like A Long Way Gone. The author is very descriptive, bringing the book to life in the way he writes. The theme I felt impacted me the most was trust in chapter six, with the six boys and how they stuck together in the worst situation. I have very good relationship with my parents. We had been through some tough times in the last couple of years, but we all stuck together and worked through those days as one unit.

  3. Hey Kyle, I can agree with you on the point that getting used to writing in the margins is very difficult and even frustrating for me at times. I can also agree with you that in A Long Way Gone the author is very very descriptive and brings the book to life!!!
