Journal 7 Carli Swisher

A character who has meant the most to me is Esther. She is very helpful with all of the boys and really wants them all to get better and try to get back to being boys and not soldiers. She wants them to that it is not their fault that they had to fight in the war and that now they are they way they are. With Ismael she is very concerned and helpful. In the book she tries to really get him to talk about everything that has happened. She also gives him a cassette and tapes to play in it to try and relax him but she doesn't do anything like that for the other boys. She is a good person with a big heart that is really changing the boy's lives.

I think that Ismael's rehabilitation is going ok I don't think it is possible for him to forget about everything completely because he has been through and seen so much in life. I wouldn't mind if he would move into my neighborhood because I know that during the day he his fine and doesn't have to many flash backs but at night he gets the nightmares. He is at a state right now in the book that he won't kill anyone that's just walking down the street like he used to when he was a soldier. I would be fine if he was in my neighborhood but I would still be aware of what could happen to him at any point in time.

A writing technique that I think Beah uses really well throughout the book is his visual details. Whenever he is explaining a situation he does it in a very visual way and I really feel as if I am in the book at that time. an example of this would be " Peeled flesh hung down and congealed blocks of blood and particles clung to each hanging bit of skin." When I read this I can really picture it as much as I don't want to I can and it makes we feel as if I am in the scene with him.

A passage that I really have liked throughout the book is the one  by Saidu it states " Every time people come at us with the intention of killing us, I close my eyes and wait for death. Even though I am still alive, I feel like each time accept death, part of me dies". I like this quote because it shows what these boys are thinking as they are going through the war. They are being put through so much pain that is not just physical but mostly mental as well. I think that it is so sad and that they shouldn't have to be suffering like they did.

  4. Hi Carli- I like the first paragraph and how you chose Esther as the character to write about. Esther is a good character. She is kind enough to stick around with the child soldiers to turn them back into boys. I can't imagine having to to work with them and their struggles. I think this would be a way to make a change in the world. I think its great what she is doing.
